Place Value: Each digit in a number has a value based on its position (units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands).

Example: In the number 25,674, the place values are:

  • 2 ten thousands
  • 5 thousands
  • 6 hundreds
  • 7 tens
  • 4 units

Line Up the Numbers:

Write the numbers in a column, aligning them by their place values (units under units, tens under tens, etc.).

  • Example:

Start from the Right:

Begin adding from the rightmost digit (units place) and move left.

  • Example: For the numbers above, start with 5 (units) + 9 (units) = 14. Write down 4 and carry over 1 to the tens place.

Carry Over:

When the sum of a column is 10 or more, write down the last digit and carry over the tens digit to the next column.

  • Example: In the column with 4 (units) + 8 (units) + 1 (carry) = 13. Write down 3 and carry over 1.

Add the Remaining Columns:

Continue adding each column, including any carry-overs from the previous column.

  • Example:

Write Down the Final Sum:

Ensure all columns are added and carry-overs are correctly applied.

  • Example: The final sum of 12,345 + 6,789 is 19,134.

Example 1:

Example 2:

Example 3:

  • Double-Check Work: After finding the sum, check your work by adding the numbers again or using a different method.
  • Use Estimation: Estimate the sum before performing the exact addition to check if the result makes sense.
  • Practice Regularly: Regular practice helps improve speed and accuracy in adding larger numbers.

Learn with an example

  • Add the ones. Add 7 + 6. Remember to carry over.
  • Add the tens. Add 1 + 7 + 2. Remember to carry over.
  • Add the hundreds. Add 1 + 8 + 4. Remember to carry over.
  • Add the thousands. Add 1 + 3 + 1.
  • The sum is 5,303.
  • Add the ones. Add 1 + 1.
  • Add the tens. Add 9 + 5. Remember to carry over.
  • Add the hundreds. Add 1 + 1 + 7.
  • Add the thousands. Add 4 + 1.
  • The sum is 5,942.

3,141 + 3,314 = ___,_____

  • Add the ones. Add 1 + 4.
  • Add the tens. Add 4 + 1.
  • Add the hundreds. Add 1 + 3.
  • Add the thousands. Add 3 + 3.
  • The sum is 6,455.
