Subtract numbers up to five digits

Key notes:

Subtraction means taking away one number from another.

  • Example: 752 – 436 = 316

Five-digit numbers can be as large as 99,999.

  • Example: 65,432 – 24,126

Always write numbers in columns (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands).

Start subtracting from the ones place and move left (→ tens → hundreds → thousands → ten-thousands).

If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, we must borrow from the next place value.

  • Example: Subtract 54,237 – 28,569
   5 4 2 3 7
- 2 8 5 6 9
-------------

👉 Step 1: Subtract ones → 7 – 9 → need to borrow → 17 – 9 = 8
👉 Step 2: Subtract tens → 2 became 1 (after borrowing), so 1 – 6 → borrow → 11 – 6 = 5
👉 Step 3: Subtract hundreds → 1 became 0, so 0 – 5 → borrow → 10 – 5 = 5
👉 Step 4: Subtract thousands → 3 became 2, so 2 – 8 → borrow → 12 – 8 = 4
👉 Step 5: Subtract ten-thousands → 4 became 3, so 3 – 2 = 1

✅ Answer = 25,668
