Choose numbers with a particular difference

Difference means subtraction – It tells us how far apart two numbers are.
Example: The difference between 15 and 8 is
15−8=7.

To choose numbers with a particular difference, we need two numbers such that when one is subtracted from the other, the result is the given difference.

Formula:

  • If the difference is D, and the first number is A, then the second number can be:
  • A+D (a bigger number)
  • A−D (a smaller number, if it does not go below 0)

Choose two numbers with a difference of 5:

  • 12 and 7 → 12−7=5
  • 20 and 15 → 20−15=5

Choose two numbers with a difference of 10:

  • 18 and 8 → 18−8=10
  • 25 and 15 → 25−15=10

If the number is 30 and the difference is 6:

  • 30+6=36 → Numbers are 30 and 36
  • 30−6=24 → Numbers are 30 and 24

  1. Read the problem carefully.
  2. Note the given difference.
  3. Start with any number.
  4. Add or subtract the difference to get the other number.
  5. Check your answer by subtraction.

  • Choose two numbers with a difference of 7.
  • Choose two numbers with a difference of 12.
  • If one number is 50, find another number with a difference of 9.
  • Find two numbers with a difference of 20.
  • If one number is 72, what is the other number when the difference is 15?
