Properties of division

Fact families :
A fact family is a set of math facts that all use the same numbers. Fact families show how different operations relate to each other.

Addition and subtraction fact families

Addition and subtraction fact families have two addition facts and two subtraction facts. All of the facts use the same three numbers.Let’s look at an example.

Fact family with 3, 4, 7
3 + 4 = 774 = 3
4 + 3 = 773 = 4

The fact family shows that addition and subtraction are opposites.

Multiplication and division fact families

Multiplication and division fact families have two multiplication facts and two division facts. All of the facts use the same three numbers. Let’s look at an example.

Fact family with 5, 6, 30
5 × 6 = 3030 ÷ 6 = 5
6 × 5 = 3030 ÷ 5 = 6

The fact family shows that multiplication and division are opposites.

note:

  • Dividing 0 by any other number gives 0.
  • Use the inverse relationship between multiplication and division.
  • Multiplying by 1 does not change a number.

Learn with an example

Use the letter x as the multiplication sign.

A related multiplication fact is a multiplication number sentence that uses the same numbers.

There are two related multiplication facts for this division fact.

8 × 4 = 32

4 × 8 = 32

Use the letter x as the multiplication sign.

solution:

A related multiplication fact is a multiplication number sentence that uses the same numbers.

There are two related multiplication facts for this division fact.

4 × 7 = 28

7 × 4 = 28

4 × 9 =

If 36 ÷ 4 = 9, then…

9 × 4 = 36
4 × 9 = 36

Use the second equation. The number 36 must go in the blank space.
