Divide larger numbers: word problems

  • Division is used to split or share things equally.
  • In word problems, look for clues like “shared equally,” “per group,” or “each person” to identify division.
  • Larger numbers can be divided using long division or estimation.
  • Identify what the problem is asking for. Look for numbers and key division words.
  • Dividend is the larger number (total amount).
  • Divisor is the smaller number (the number of groups or items per group).
  • Translate the word problem into a division equation (e.g., total items ÷ number of groups = items per group).
  • Divide the numbers step by step.
  • If there’s a remainder, interpret it based on the word problem context.
  • Re-read the question and see if your answer makes sense.
  • Split into” (e.g., 24 apples split into 4 baskets).
  • Each person gets” (e.g., how many cookies each person gets from a batch of 100).
  • Per group” (e.g., how many candies per group if there are 5 groups and 45 candies).

When division doesn’t result in a whole number, you’ll have a remainder.

Example: 25 students need to be seated at tables with 4 students per table. How many tables are needed?

  • Solution: 25 ÷ 4 = 6 remainder 1. The remainder means 1 extra student will need another table, so 7 tables are needed.
  • Estimation: Round large numbers to simplify calculations (e.g., round 542 ÷ 9 to 540 ÷ 9).
  • Break into Smaller Parts: Break large division problems into simpler steps (e.g., divide 900 by 3 by first dividing 900 by 10, then by 3).

Learn with an example

🔥Lee County needs 615 pieces of pipe to repair some water lines. If each box contains 2 pieces of pipe,

Divide the number of pieces of pipe by the number in each box.

Now think about the remainder. The answer is either 307 or 308.

Multiply:

2 × 307 = 614

2 × 308 = 616

307 boxes (614 pieces of pipe) is not enough. 308 boxes (616 pieces of pipe) is correct. Lee County should buy 308 boxes.

🔥The Summerfield library has ₹537 to buy science magazines. If each magazine costs ₹5,

Divide the amount of money by the cost of each magazine.

Now think about the remainder. The answer is either 107 or 108.

Multiply:

₹5 × 107 = ₹535

₹5 × 108 = ₹540

107 science magazines (₹535) is correct. 108 science magazines (₹540) is too expensive. The library will be able to buy 107 magazines.

🔥A summer camp wants to buy 844 ice lollies. If there are 6 ice lollies in each box,

_____ boxes.

Divide the number of ice lollies by the number in each box.

Now think about the remainder. The answer is either 140 or 141.

Multiply:

6 × 140 = 840

6 × 141 = 846

140 boxes (840 ice lollies) is not enough. 141 boxes (846 ice lollies) is correct. The camp should buy 141 boxes.
