Replace the noun with a personal pronoun

  • Personal pronouns are words that replace nouns (the names of people, animals, things, or places) in a sentence to avoid repetition.
  • Examples: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them

  • To make sentences clearer and less repetitive.
  • Example:
    Instead of saying, “John is playing. John loves soccer,” you can say, “John is playing. He loves soccer.”

  • Look at the noun in the sentence and choose the correct personal pronoun based on who or what the noun refers to.

Examples:

  1. Replace a Person (Male)
  • John is running.
  • Replace “John” with “he”: He is running.

  • Mary likes ice cream.
  • Replace “Mary” with “she”: She likes ice cream.
  1. Replace Multiple People
  • Anna and Tom are playing.
  • Replace “Anna and Tom” with “they”: They are playing.
  1. Replace an Object or Animal
  • The dog is barking.
  • Replace “The dog” with “it”: It is barking.
  1. Replace a Group (Including Yourself)
  • My friends and I are going to the park.
  • Replace “My friends and I” with “we”: We are going to the park.

  • Have students rewrite sentences by replacing the nouns with the correct personal pronouns.

Example:

  • Sarah and I went to the store.
  • Replace with: We went to the store.
