Use possessive pronouns

  • Possessive pronouns are words that show who or what something belongs to. They replace the noun to show ownership.
  • Examples: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs

SingularPlural
mineours
yoursyours
histheirs
herstheirs
its

  • Possessive pronouns are used in sentences to avoid repeating the noun.

Examples:

  1. This pen is mine.
  • (Instead of saying “This is my pen,” we use “mine” to avoid repeating “pen”).
  1. That lunchbox is yours.
  • (We use “yours” to show it belongs to you without repeating “lunchbox”).
  1. The house is theirs.
  • (This shows the house belongs to them without repeating “house”).

  • Possessive Pronouns replace the noun and stand alone.
  • Example: This book is mine.
  • Possessive Adjectives describe a noun but don’t replace it.
  • Example: This is my book.

  • Avoid using apostrophes with possessive pronouns.
  • Example: its (possessive) vs it’s (it is).
  • Don’t confuse “your” (possessive adjective) with “yours” (possessive pronoun).

  • practice by replacing nouns in sentences with the correct possessive pronouns.
