Form the perfect verb tenses

Perfect tenses show that an action is finished or completed. They often use โ€œhave,โ€ โ€œhas,โ€ or โ€œhadโ€ with the past participle of a verb.

Used for actions that happened at some time before now or actions continuing to now.

Formula:

  • Subject + has/have + past participle

Examples:

  • ๐ŸŒŸ I have finished my homework.
  • ๐ŸŒŸ She has eaten her lunch.

Tip:

  • Use has with he, she, it
  • Use have with I, we, you, they

Used for an action that happened before another past action.

Formula:

  • Subject + had + past participle

Examples:

  • ๐ŸŒŸ I had finished my homework before my mom called.
  • ๐ŸŒŸ They had left the school when it started raining.

Tip:

  • Think: โ€œpast of the pastโ€

Used for an action that will be completed before a certain time in the future.

Formula:

  • Subject + will have + past participle

Examples:

  • ๐ŸŒŸ I will have finished my project by tomorrow.
  • ๐ŸŒŸ She will have cooked dinner before we arrive.

Tip:

  • Focus on the word โ€œbyโ€ to show the time it will be completed.
  • Always use the past participle of the main verb.
  • Use has/have/had/will have correctly depending on tense.
  • Perfect tenses often answer โ€œWhen?โ€ or โ€œBy when?โ€
