Kelby Makes a Splash

Kelby was lost in thought as his arms paddled through the water and his tail fin flapped slowly. He and the other young mermen and mermaids were on their way to school. Today Ms Davy’s class was supposed to write their ‘How I Made a Splash’ stories. Kelby loved writing, but he couldn’t think of a time when he’d succeeded at something really important.

He was so busy worrying that he almost forgot to look for the octopus. Kelby had seen her in the seaweed garden near school almost every day. He wondered why she was there, but every time he’d approached, the octopus sprayed an inky black cloud and darted away.

Sure enough, the octopus was hiding in the tall, branching seaweed.

‘Hi, my name’s Kelby,’ he called. ‘Don’t worry—I’m friendly!’

The octopus stayed hidden, but at least she didn’t squirt her black cloud and run away.

‘I’m Olivia,’ she said at last.
