Identify prepositions

  • A preposition is a word that links nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words in a sentence. It often tells us about time, place, direction, or manner.

Here are some common prepositions:

PrepositionExample Sentence
inThe cat is in the box.
onThe book is on the table.
underThe dog is under the bed.
aboveThe picture is above the sofa.
betweenThe ball is between the shoes.
behindThe tree is behind the house.
nearThe school is near my house.
withI went to the park with my friend.
atWe will meet at the mall.

  • Show Relationships: Prepositions help clarify where something is, when something happens, or how something is done. Examples:
  • “The cat is on the roof.” (place)
  • “I will see you after school.” (time)
  • “She walked to the store.” (direction)
  • Prepositional Phrases: A preposition is often part of a prepositional phrase, which includes the preposition and its object (the noun or pronoun that follows it). Example:
  • “We sat on the grass.” (Here, on is the preposition, and the grass is the object of the preposition.)
