Preserve.

In 1980, the US government passed a law to protect 43 million hectares of land in the state of Alaska. This meant that the land had to be kept in its natural state. For example, companies could not use it to drill for oil. Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve was one of the parks created on this protected land. With more than 3 million hectares of land, it is one of the world’s largest national parks.
Gates of the Arctic is not a typical national park. Most national parks have visitor centres and hiking trails. In Gates of the Arctic, you are on your own in the wilderness. It has no roads, so most visitors enter the park by aeroplane. It is also possible to hike to Gates of the Arctic, but it is a eight-kilometre walk from the motorway to the park. The park is located above the Arctic Circle, so it experiences temperatures well below zero in the winter. Therefore, most people choose to visit during the summer season.
Gates of the Arctic may sound like an empty place, but it is home to both people and wildlife. There are eleven communities within the park where native tribes have lived for thousands of years. They hunt caribou, also called reindeer, for food and clothing. In addition to caribou, other animals like beavers, bears and moose roam free in the park.
