Mammoth Cave is a large cave system in the US state of Kentucky. It is made up of more than 650 kilometres of caves. The name ‘Mammoth’ comes from its huge size. It is the world’s longest known cave system. In fact, there are parts of it that still have not been explored.
Like many other caves, Mammoth Cave was formed by rainwater. The cave is made of limestone, a type of rock that dissolves easily in water. Starting millions of years ago, rainwater soaked into holes in the limestone. Over time, it ate away at the rock. Some rainwater collected into underground streams, which created wide tunnels called avenues. The cave also contains deep pits, formed by water that dripped in the same spot for many years. Rainwater still flows through the cave, and the tunnels continue to be shaped by it today.
Scientists believe that people first entered the cave over four thousand years ago. But it was not until the early 1800s that Mammoth Cave became a popular attraction for people to visit. That is when the first railways were built near the cave. In 1816, guides began to provide tours. Some tours included underground boat rides along the Echo River.
In 1941, Mammoth Cave was made a US national park to preserve the cave system. At Mammoth Cave National Park, guests can tour famous avenues of the cave. They can also canoe, hike and camp on the land above the caves.
