Needle.

The Space Needle is a famous landmark in the American city of Seattle. The 184-metre tower reaches high above the city’s other buildings. It provides visitors with a chance to enjoy views of the city and the scenery beyond. From the top, you can see Seattle’s city centre, the water of Puget Sound and surrounding mountains.

The Space Needle was built for the 1962 World’s Fair. World’s Fairs were large events where different countries showed off new technologies. In 1962, the World’s Fair was all about outer space. It was important for the tower to represent space and the future. The first design plans showed a tall, skinny building with a wider observation area near the top. The idea came from a lollipop-shaped building in Germany. The Space Needle was named for its thin, futuristic look. The name stuck, but the design was modified to have three legs with a flat, flying saucer-like top. It looks less like a needle, but it still has a futuristic design.

For years, the Space Needle has been one of the most recognisable sights in Seattle. But it does not look exactly like it did in 1962. In the 1980s, safety fences were added to the outdoor observation deck and a second viewing platform was added. Later, in the 2010s, the safety fences were replaced with glass walls. This was a big hit with visitors. Additionally, parts of the floor were replaced with glass. Now guests can see the ground 150 metres below them.
