Imagine being able to make your own game pieces, model sets or action figures. If you have a 3D printer, that is exactly what you can do! It sounds like magic, but a 3D printer is a real machine. It can be used to create actual toys, as well as things like machine parts and medical supplies. Some 3D printers can even make food!

Unlike regular printers, 3D printers do not use paper or ink. Instead of printing flat pictures, they print three-dimensional objects with different sides and edges. Instead of ink, they use many different materials, like glass, metal and even chocolate! The most common material for 3D printing is a special kind of plastic.

The 3D printer works by heating a printing material until it melts. Next, it arranges the melted material into a thin layer. As the material cools down, it becomes solid again. Then the printer stacks a new layer on top of the first. Sometimes there are hundreds or even thousands of layers. The object grows and grows, slowly taking shape.

Most 3D printers are quite expensive, and they can take up a lot of space. However, making objects with a 3D printer is often more efficient than making them in other ways. For example, a company in America built an entire house using a 3D printer. This house cost far less than a home built in the usual way, and the whole job was finished in just forty-eight hours!

People keep coming up with new ways to use 3D printers. Companies have used them to make shoes, aeroplane parts and even hamburgers. The US Navy came up with the idea of putting them on ships, so sailors can print new tools or parts while they are at sea. The printers have even been used by astronauts in space. Everywhere you look, on this planet and beyond, 3D printers are turning ideas into objects.
