Capitalising the names of people and pets and titles of respect

  • Always capitalize the first letter of a person’s name. Examples:
  • Correct: Sarah, James, Mr. Smith
  • Incorrect: sarah, james, mr. smith

  • Just like people, always capitalize the names of your pets. Examples:
  • Correct: Bella (dog), Whiskers (cat), Max (hamster)
  • Incorrect: bella, whiskers, max

  • Titles of respect (like Mr., Mrs., Dr., and Professor) should always be capitalized when they come before a person’s name. Examples:
  • Correct:
    • Mr. Johnson
    • Mrs. Smith
    • Dr. Brown
  • Incorrect:
    • mr. johnson
    • mrs. smith
    • dr. brown
  • If the title comes after the name, it should not be capitalized. Examples:
  • Correct:
    • John Smith, Mr.
    • Sarah Johnson, Dr.
  • Incorrect:
    • John Smith, mr.
    • Sarah Johnson, dr.

  • Always capitalize:
  • The first letter of people’s names.
  • The first letter of pets’ names.
