Find two numbers based on sum and difference
Key notes :
π’β¨ What Is the Sum?
- The sum is the result when you add two numbers.
- Example: 8 + 5 = 13 β 13 is the sum.
- βπ°
ββ¨ What Is the Difference?
- The difference is the result when you subtract two numbers.
- Example: 8 β 5 = 3 β 3 is the difference.
- βπ°
π§ π‘ To Find the Two Numbers:
If you know the sum and the difference of two numbers, use this trick:
π Step 1: Add the Sum and Difference
π (Sum + Difference) Γ· 2 = Bigger Number
π‘ Because the bigger number includes the extra amount shown in the difference!
π Step 2: Subtract the Difference from the Sum
π (Sum β Difference) Γ· 2 = Smaller Number
βοΈ Example Time! π§©
π² Sum = 20
π² Difference = 4
- Bigger number = (20 + 4) Γ· 2 = 12
- Smaller number = (20 β 4) Γ· 2 = 8
β¨ So the two numbers are 12 and 8! π
ππ¬ Remember This Rule!
β When you know sum and difference,
π The bigger number is always closer to the sum + difference.
π The smaller number is always closer to the sum β difference.
π¨π§Έ Why This Works?
- The difference tells how far apart the two numbers are.
- The sum tells how much they add up to.
- Combining both helps us separate the bigger and smaller values! π
Learn with an example
π₯The sum of two numbers is 16. The difference of the two numbers is 8.
What are the two numbers?
β ___and____ β
- Think of pairs of numbers whose difference is 8. Then find the sum of each pair.

- The numbers are 12 and 4.
π₯The sum of two numbers is 12. The difference of the two numbers is 2.
What are the two numbers?
β ____and____
- Think of pairs of numbers whose difference is 2. Then find the sum of each pair.

β
- The numbers are 7 and 5.
π₯ The difference of two numbers is 4. Their sum is 20.
What are the two numbers?
β ____and___ β
- Think of pairs of numbers whose difference is 4. Then find the sum of each pair.

- The numbers are 12 and 8.
