Basic Subtraction for Making Change

• Use subtraction to find the change:

Amount Given − Total Cost = Change

• Example: If a toy costs $7 and you pay $10, the change is $10 – $7 = $3.

Counting Up Method

Start from the price and count up to the amount given.

Example: If an item costs $3.75 and you pay $5:

• Count from $3.75 to $4.00 (add 25¢).
• Count from $4.00 to $5.00 (add $1.00).
• The total change is $1.25.

Making Change with Coins and Bills

Use the fewest number of coins and bills to give change.

Example: If the change is $2.50, you can give:

• 1 two-dollar bill + 2 quarters.
