Metric mixed units

  • The metric system uses units like millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), and kilometers (km) for measuring length; grams (g) and kilograms (kg) for weight; and liters (L) for volume.
  • Mixed units refer to measurements that combine different units. For example, 3 meters 45 centimeters (3 m 45 cm) or 2 kilograms 300 grams (2 kg 300 g).
  • Length: 1000 millimeters (mm) = 1 meter (m), 100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m), 1000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km).
  • Weight: 1000 grams (g) = 1 kilogram (kg).
  • Volume: 1000 milliliters (ml) = 1 liter (L).
  • When adding or subtracting mixed units, first convert all measurements to the same unit before performing the operation. For example, to add 3 meters 50 centimeters and 2 meters 75 centimeters, convert centimeters to meters or vice versa.
  • Create word problems where students must convert and add or subtract mixed units, such as “Sarah has 4 meters 30 centimeters of ribbon, and she buys another 2 meters 80 centimeters. How much ribbon does she have in total?”
  • Show how mixed units are used in real life, such as measuring the height of a person (in meters and centimeters), weighing ingredients (in kilograms and grams), or measuring liquids (in liters and milliliters).

Learn with an example

6 m 88 cm = ______ cm

Convert the 6 metres to centimetres.

Multiply:

6 × 100 = 600
6 m = 600 cm

Now add this to the 88 centimetres you already have:

6 m 88 cm = 600 cm + 88 cm

6 m 88 cm = 688 cm

777 cm = _____ m ______ cm

Find out how many metres are in 777 centimetres.

Divide:

777 ÷ 100 = 7 R77

There are 7 metres, with 77 centimetres left over.

777 cm = 7 m 77 cm

51 mm = _____ cm ______ mm

Find out how many centimetres are in 51 millimetres.

Divide:

51 ÷ 10 = 5 R1

There are 5 centimetres, with 1 millimetre left over.

51 mm = 5 cm 1 mm
