Convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time

In 24-hour time, 00:00 is midnight and 12:00 is noon. In 12-hour time, 12:00 A.M. is midnight and 12:00 P.M. is noon.

To convert from 12-hour time to 24-hour time:

  • If the time is between 12:00 A.M. and 12:59 A.M., subtract 12 hours.
  • If the time is between 1:00 A.M. and 12:59 P.M., you do not need to add or subtract.
  • If the time is between 1:00 P.M. and 11:59 P.M., add 12 hours.

Do not include A.M. or P.M.

1:00 P.M. is between 1:00 P.M. and 11:59 P.M. Add 12:00:

01:00 + 12:00 = 13:00

🎯 Write 8:00 P.M. as a 24-hour time.

8:00 P.M. is between 1:00 P.M. and 11:59 P.M. Add 12:00:

08:00 + 12:00 = 20:00

🎯 Write 21:00 as a 12-hour time.

21:00 is between 13:00 and 23:59. Subtract 12:00 and write the time with 3 digits:

21:00 − 12:00 = 9:00

Include P.M. because the time is afternoon.

9:00 P.M.
