Undigested Food Is Thrown Out

The digestive system breaks down food into nutrients that our body can use for energy, growth, and repair.

Not all food is fully digested; some parts of food, like fiber, cannot be broken down by the body. This part of the food becomes waste.

After most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine, any leftover, undigested food passes into the large intestine.

In the large intestine, water is absorbed from the undigested food, making the waste more solid.

The remaining solid waste, known as feces, is stored in the rectum until it’s ready to be excreted.

When the body is ready to remove waste, it is pushed out through the anus. This is called excretion or defecation.

Removing waste from our bodies keeps us healthy by preventing the buildup of harmful substances.

Eating fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps in forming and moving waste through the digestive system.
